Derma Fillers

Derma Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore or add volume, enhance contours, and support skin hydration. Different types of fillers vary in thickness and characteristics, which means a practitioner will select the most appropriate product for specific treatment areas.

Common areas where dermal fillers may be used include:

  • Lips

  • Cheeks

  • Chin

  • Jawline

  • Marionette lines (mouth to chin folds)

  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)

Before treatment:

  • A consultation is required to discuss your concerns and medical history.

  • Your practitioner will provide detailed information about the procedure.

  • An individualised plan will be developed to suit your needs and preferences.

Allure Derma treatments are administered by a Registered Nurse and supported by experienced therapists.

We are committed to ethical practice, professionalism, and client safety.

The following FAQs provide important information about treatment, risks, and aftercare.
Please read carefully before booking.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers restore or add volume to areas affected by changes in the skin and underlying tissue. Hyaluronic acid in the filler also draws water into the skin, which supports hydration and elasticity.

What results can I expect?

Fillers are temporary and gradually break down in the body over time. Longevity varies between individuals and depends on factors such as lifestyle, metabolism, and treatment area. Highly active people, smokers, or those under significant stress may find fillers do not last as long.

How do I prepare before treatment?

A consultation is required with a Registered Nurse and prescribing Doctor to review your medical history and confirm suitability.

You may be advised to:

  • One week prior: Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements such as St John’s Wort, vitamin E, garlic, ginkgo biloba, and omega-3.

  • Two days prior: Avoid retinoids, glycolic acid, and other active skincare products. Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or hair removal creams in the treatment area.

  • 24 hours prior: Avoid alcohol.

Will it hurt?

Some people describe filler injections as mildly uncomfortable. A topical anaesthetic cream and the inclusion of lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) in the product help reduce sensitivity.

Ice packs may also be used to increase comfort and reduce bruising.

Who is suitable for dermal fillers?

Suitability is assessed at consultation. Fillers may not be recommended for individuals who:

  • Have had anaphylaxis to bee stings or certain medications

  • Have an active skin infection in or near the treatment area

  • Have a history of herpes simplex virus (preventative medication may be advised)

  • Have had permanent or stimulatory fillers (such as Aquamid or Sculptra)

  • Are taking Roaccutane

  • Have had extensive facial surgery, deep chemical peels, or laser resurfacing in the past 6 months

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy soon

  • Have recurrent sinus infections, take blood-thinning medications, or are undergoing major dental work

What are the side effects and risks?

Expected side effects may include:

  • Redness

  • Bruising

  • Swelling

  • Tenderness

Less common risks and complications include:

  • Allergic reaction

  • Infection

  • Skin necrosis (rare)

  • Scarring

  • Granuloma formation (nodules)

  • Vision complications (very rare)

  • Cold sore reactivation in those with a history of herpes simplex virus

What aftercare is recommended?

It is common to experience redness, swelling, tenderness, or mild itching for a few days. The treated area may feel firm until the filler integrates with surrounding tissue. Initial swelling after lip treatment may last longer.

General aftercare follows the 3 C’s:

  • Cool

    • Apply a cold compress for 10 minutes every hour on the day of treatment (do not apply ice directly).

    • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

    • Avoid heat exposure such as saunas or solariums.

  • Calm

    • Avoid pressure to treated areas (e.g. try sleeping on your back).

    • Use simple pain relief such as paracetamol if required.

    • Arnica or Hirudoid cream may help with bruising.

  • Clear

    • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.

    • Do not use active skincare (retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs) or oil-based makeup for 24 hours.

    • Avoid facials, waxing, peels, IPL, skin needling, or microdermabrasion for 2 weeks unless advised.

    • Do not massage the treated area unless directed by your practitioner.

Do I need follow-up?

A follow-up appointment after 2 weeks is usually recommended to review results and make any adjustments if required. The number and frequency of treatments vary:

  • Most people repeat fillers every 6–12 months.

  • Lip fillers may need refreshing every 6 months.

  • Some areas may require additional product within 2–4 weeks to achieve the planned outcome.
